Territory

Northeast mainland.

In the Terra Quente, the olive tree shapes the landscape and Transmontana olive-growing culture.

Azeite de Trás-os-Montes PDO is produced in the Transmontana region: Mirandela, Vila Flor, Alfândega da Fé, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Carrazeda de Ansiães and the full municipalities of Valpaços, Murça and Torre de Moncorvo, plus parishes of Mogadouro, Vimioso and Bragança.

Olive-oil use in the region reaches back to Antiquity. In Mirandela, olive groves date from the first half of the sixteenth century; by 1896 the town already had twelve mills, and in 1903 the region’s oil won a silver medal at an agricultural exhibition.
