Territory

A historic production centre.

Predominantly limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate shape cultivation in the Tagus valley.

The area includes Abrantes, Alcanena, Alcobaça, Alvaiázere, Azambuja, Cartaxo, Constância, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Gavião, Golegã, Mação, Ourém, Pombal, Porto de Mós, Santarém, Sardoal, Tomar, Vila de Rei, Vila Nova da Barquinha and Torres Novas.

Since the early kings of Portugal, Santarém has ranked among the country’s main olive-oil centres. In the eighteenth century Galega became predominant in the region; in the nineteenth, Alexandre Herculano became associated with innovations in local olive growing.
