Territory

Portalegre and Évora.

A stretch of Alto Alentejo between Portalegre and Évora, with Galega dominant in the olive landscape.

It covers municipalities and parishes in the Évora district (including Alandroal, Borba, Estremoz, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Vila Viçosa and parishes of Évora and Mourão) and in the Portalegre district (Alter do Chão, Arronches, Avis, Campo Maior, Castelo de Vide, Crato, Elvas, Fronteira, Marvão, Monforte, Nisa, Portalegre and Sousel).

Olive growing in this territory is attested from before the Roman and Visigothic periods, continuing through Arab presence. In the Middle Ages, olive oil held a central place in seasoning food.
