Territory

Beira Alta and Beira Baixa.

Two inland mountain areas — Beira Alta and Beira Baixa — with a shared olive-growing identity.

Beira Alta includes municipalities such as Mêda, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel, Guarda, Fornos de Algodres, Trancoso, Celorico da Beira, Seia, Gouveia, Manteigas, Almeida and Sabugal. Beira Baixa includes Covilhã, Belmonte, Fundão, Penamacor, Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco, Vila Velha de Ródão, Proença-a-Nova, Oleiros, Sertã, Vila de Rei and Mação.

The wealth of Beira Interior olive oil is noted in Portuguese historiography. Groves destroyed in the Restoration War were replanted in Beira Baixa in 1668; in the seventeenth century olive oil amounted to about one sixth of Portuguese exports through the ports of Lisbon and Porto.
